A Traviel Pursuit

A personal chronicle of our travels inspired by a global pandemic…

When in Roma…

Rome, Roma in Italian, is known throughout the world as the Eternal City. With such a grandiose name, the traveler would expect to step out into fantasy wonderland the moment they arrived. We weren’t, at least not initially. Maybe it was the jet lag or our rumbling stomachs (we were dying to get our fast taste of the delicious food that we had heard so much about) that made us question what all the fuss was about. The streets near our lodging were, for lack of a better word, dingy. They lacked the clean precision we had been accustomed to back in the States.

I struggle with what to write retrospectively about this city. I also apologize beforehand for the lack of pictures and videos (images off the internet have been used for illustration); I never imagined that a day would come when I would decide to chronicle our travels in a blog.

This requires a shift in thinking on our end; something that I hope will continue when we are able to travel internationally again. The images and recordings are no longer meant just for the two of us. The goal is to share them with a wider audience. Our mindset should have been take that picture of the Trevi Fountain even while it was under repair and not don’t take that picture, it should be a mental image only we will have the good fortune to carry around in our heads.

I guess I was being too much of an optimist, thinking that everyone, in time, would be able to follow in our footsteps. But that is not reality for some and the next best thing would be to experience it through the eyes and ears of those that have.

I won’t bore the reader with all the play-by-plays for this trip (or any other going forward), just the highlights/lowlights and standouts. I wouldn’t want to read that kind of blog myself anyway.
