A Traviel Pursuit

A tale of The Alhambra…

I am hard pressed to describe the magnificence of The Alhambra. It is my romantic dream of Arabia come to life. The right words still allude me even after having read “Tales of the Alhambra” by American writer Washington Irving (author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle) before our trip in 2017.

The Alhambra (or “the red one” in Arabic) is nestled on a promontory of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and was once a self-contained city for the Muslim rulers of the region. It is the most well-known monument of Islamic architecture in Europe and best-preserved palace from Arab antiquity.

The location is strategically advantageous; flanked by valleys on both sides, a river to the north, and backed by a wooded mountainous area.
