The color white or “Abyad ” in Arabic carries significant spiritual and cultural meaning in the Arab world.
PURITY. The quality or state of being pure. An original aim of the Bahia Palace was to maintain and showcase the purity of Moroccan design (elements such as layered courtyards, geometry, and human-scale focus) within the larger Arabic architectural context.
FUN FACT. Originating in Morocco, Zellige tiles have become ubiquitous in the modern kitchens, bathrooms, and patios of homes throughout the world. A style of mosaic tilework that is comprised of individually hand-chiseled pieces. Zellige is prized for both its small imperfections and rich color variations as well as its tessellatic design of radiating patterns and polygons (a limitation imposed by the aniconism of Islam).
